Leeds Trinity University- Health and Life Science Building
Scope of Works
The facility includes clinical skills suites, anatomy and physiology labs, consultation and treatment rooms, and multi-purpose teaching spaces, along with breakout zones, welfare areas, and staff offices. The modular construction approach allowed for rapid on-site installation, minimising disruption to campus operations. The internal fit-out included advanced mechanical and electrical systems to support clinical equipment, simulation technologies, and digital teaching platforms.
Design and Compliance
Though not a clinical healthcare environment, the facility was designed to replicate NHS standards where appropriate, particularly in simulation and consultation zones. In collaboration with the university’s academic team, key teaching areas were developed in line with Health Building Notes (HBN) and Health Technical Memoranda (HTM) to ensure authenticity and compliance in clinical skills training. The design also prioritised user safety, infection control, and long-term durability.
Environmental Performance and Sustainability
Sustainability was central to the project, both in construction and operation. The modular build process significantly reduced waste, site disruption, and embodied carbon. The facility incorporates high-performance insulation, low-energy lighting, smart heating and ventilation controls, and responsibly sourced materials, all contributing to the university’s environmental and carbon reduction commitments.
Stakeholder Engagement
Extensive stakeholder engagement was key to delivering a facility that met both pedagogical and technical requirements. Working closely with academic leads, simulation specialists, estates teams, and IT consultants, Actiform ensured the internal layout, services, and finishes supported new modes of teaching while integrating seamlessly into the university estate. The building’s external appearance and massing were designed to complement existing campus architecture and respect the surrounding context.
Social Value
This landmark project enhances Leeds Trinity University’s capacity to deliver high-quality, workforce-ready healthcare education. By embedding real-world clinical simulation into its curriculum, the facility directly supports the training of future NHS professionals and addresses local skills gaps in health and social care. During construction, the project also supported regional employment and contributed to the university’s goal of improving social mobility through education.
