Project Description

As part of wider long term regeneration scheme Actiform were appointed through a successful competitive tender process to design, manufacture and deliver a permanent two storey modular mixed-use building.

The facility, which is 440m2, is home to the expert cleaning departments that operate at the Culham site containing The Tokamak, a machine designed to harness the energy of fusion.

This new facility encompasses mixed use office spaces, large shared and open plan dining and staff break out spaces, as well as a training facility and cleaners’ areas.

The certificate for the new building is yet to be issued but is confirmed to achieve at least Excellent if not Outstanding.

Our works also included the installation of all foundations and services appertaining to this and the hard landscaping include ramps, external steps, and bike shelters, PV Solar.

Client Brief

The design and construction of a new two storey office block to provide UKAEA Cleaning Contractor accommodation on the Culham Site on a previously green field site. Consisting of:-

  • Erect site hoarding
  • Provide new supply services and waste services to the site.
  • Install new foundations.
  • Design of facility
  • Manufacture of facility
  • Construct internal and external structures.
  • First and second fix M&E services
  • Install internal and external finishes.
  • Undertake local hard landscaping works
  • Commission all service installations
  • Achieve a BREEAM certification of very good or Excellent
  • Provide all O&M and H&S record documentation.

The Result

A NET ZERO BUILDING!

Although the project was completed towards the end of 2023, the BREEAM certificate is awaiting issue however it shows we achieved a rating of Outstanding (this will not be confirmed until issued). It is confirmed to achieve at least Excellent.

Working closely with estates and clinical leads, Actiform supported the design development for the transformation of our clinical emergency care services for the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow. This involved a complete design and build modular construction to complement the creation of a state-of-the-art emergency care service.

Actiform helped us to embrace the opportunities presented by a new modular build clinical space with appropriate technology to create and support a new model of service that responds to changing clinical needs, meets the trust’s corporate objectives, and complies with sector building performance targets that we will need to meet.

The Actiform team mapped out the route to move away from the traditional siloed traditional structures, facilitating the opportunity to adopt a more flexible and adaptable approach to support services that will be complimented by technology, and support our digital clinical strategy development.

The Actiform project team worked ‘hand in hand’ with their design team to create a future focused build that rethinks the way a NHS trust delivers modular construction within a conventional ageing and varied built environment, and that is integrated into the core operation of the hospital. The completed build environment was an integral part of the overall strategy for the new emergency care services.

Having used Actiform to supply a large compound set up on a Smart Motorway project, the service received was second to none. From the initial enquiry to the final installation, all aspects of the project went to plan. Back in the autumn of 2015 we had a requirement to procure offices and welfare facilities of 3,000m2 plus over 3 floors for our Tideway-East project in Bermondsey, London.

We went out to tender and Actiform provided a construction package that we eventually purchased.
