Crossrail

Crossrail is a new underground railway line built beneath central London. Twenty-six miles of tunnel link Paddington in the west to Liverpool Street and Canary Wharf in the east, with connections to existing lines enabling trains to Reading, Heathrow, Shenfield and Abbey Wood. Actiform successfully completed the installation of site accommodation buildings across five sections of the programme, with a total project value of £2.5M.

    Challenge

    Crossrail — Europe's largest infrastructure project at the time — required high-quality site accommodation across multiple worksites along a 26-mile route through central London, each managed by a different principal contractor with its own programme and requirements.

    Solution

    Actiform delivered site accommodation buildings across five separate Crossrail sections, working directly with Vinci Construction, BBMV JV, Costain Skanska JV and Morgan Sindall, and completing every installation successfully.

    Challenge

    Central London worksites such as Finsbury Circus offered extremely limited footprints, meaning conventional single-storey accommodation could not provide the capacity each site team needed.

    Solution

    Actiform configured each installation to suit the constraints of the individual site — from 1/2-storey accommodation at Victoria Dock up to a 3-storey modular building at Finsbury Circus — maximising usable space within tight urban footprints.

    Challenge

    With five installations spread across east and central London and site programmes varying section by section, accommodation had to be manufactured, delivered and installed to fit around each contractor's schedule.

    Solution

    Actiform's off-site manufacturing approach allowed buildings to be produced away from the congested worksites and installed to suit each section's programme, keeping disruption to the live construction sites to a minimum.

Our Approach

Actiform worked as the site accommodation partner across five sections of the Crossrail programme, coordinating with four separate contractor organisations — Vinci Construction, BBMV JV, Costain Skanska JV and Morgan Sindall — each with its own site conditions, requirements and timescales.

Rather than applying a single standard solution, the team tailored each building to its location: half- and single-storey accommodation where space allowed, and stacked two- and three-storey configurations where central London footprints were at a premium.

Off-site manufacture meant each building arrived ready for rapid installation, and the repeated appointments across successive Crossrail sections reflect the confidence the programme’s major contractors placed in Actiform’s delivery.

The whole team at Actiform provide an outstanding level of customer service. Their knowledge of modular building and taking our design thoughts and turning these working collaboratively into completed projects makes working with the team very enjoyable. Actiform have a very good network of dependable third-party trades which complement the experience and push the art of the possible in terms of innovation. Not really sure what you could do better as when we raise issues they are dealt with in a timely manner, and you have good processes to ensure we never experience the same issue twice.
