Actiform designed and delivered a comprehensive on-site accommodation complex for the M3 motorway project on behalf of client Balfour Beatty.     Site teams working on major infrastructure programmes require welfare provisions that go beyond basic facilities — including DDA accessibility, faith-sensitive amenities, and dedicated drying and shower facilities.

    Solution

    The M3 accommodation was specified to include DDA-compliant WC and kitchen areas, multi-faith WC and prayer room facilities, boiler-fed showers with concealed pipework, and dehumidifier-equipped dry rooms — covering the full welfare needs of a diverse site workforce.

    The scale and complexity of an on-site compound for a major motorway project requires flexible internal layouts that can be reconfigured as the programme evolves.

    Solution

    Folding/stacking wall systems and glazed partition panels were incorporated throughout, enabling spaces to be adapted to changing team sizes and operational requirements over the course of the programme.

Our Approach

The M3 project was approached as a fully integrated design-and-build commission, with Actiform taking responsibility for every element of the accommodation from initial specification through to on-site installation. Working directly with Balfour Beatty, the team developed a compound layout that prioritised both operational efficiency and day-to-day welfare for site personnel.

Specification decisions were driven by the long-term nature of motorway construction programmes. Rather than opting for standard temporary accommodation, Actiform specified finishes and features — from LED lighting with PIR detection to fitted kitchens and quality sanitary ware — that would maintain comfort and functionality throughout an extended site occupation.

The 11-week programme demanded precise coordination between manufacturing, logistics, and on-site installation teams. The compound was delivered on schedule, with all mechanical, electrical, and fit-out elements completed and operational at handover. The features and standards developed for M3 have since become part of Actiform’s baseline specification for on-site accommodation across similar infrastructure contracts.
