To support growing patient demand and tackle elective care waiting lists, Medtronic commissioned a modular extension to an existing Catheterisation Laboratory (Cath Lab) Recovery facility — delivered by Actiform as a fully compliant, carbon-neutral solution.

    Challenge

    Rising patient demand and NHS elective care waiting lists created urgent pressure for additional clinical recovery capacity. A traditional construction approach would have meant prolonged on-site disruption, a slower programme, and significant carbon impact — all of which were incompatible with Medtronic's requirements and the NHS's sustainability agenda.

    Solution

    A 12-bed modular recovery unit, designed and manufactured off-site by Actiform, provided the rapid clinical capacity Medtronic needed. The factory-controlled build environment ensured higher consistency, reduced waste, and minimised disruption to the live hospital site.

    Challenge

    The facility needed to function as a standalone unit from day one, while remaining adaptable to future clinical expansion without costly redesign.

    Solution

    The facility was designed to operate independently or as part of a broader clinical pathway, with the flexibility to expand further — for imaging or diagnostics — at a later date. DDA-compliant access, fire-rated doors, and high-performance insulation were built in throughout.

    Challenge

    Integrating full clinical-grade mechanical and electrical systems into a modular build demanded precise coordination between off-site manufacture and on-site installation, while meeting strict healthcare infection control standards.

    Solution

    Full mechanical and electrical services were integrated into the modular design, including HVAC systems calibrated for clinical recovery environments, nurse call and data systems, emergency lighting, and fire detection. All internal finishes met infection control and healthcare hygiene standards.

Our Approach

Actiform managed the project from concept through to completion — delivering design services, siteworks and enabling works, structural manufacture, and full fit-out. The modular approach significantly reduced time on site and improved programme certainty, with the unit designed to be operational within weeks of installation.

Design development followed HTM/HBN guidance and complied with all relevant sections of the Building Regulations (Parts A, B, L, and M). The structural steel frame was designed to Eurocode BS EN standards, including wind and snow loading, with high-specification external cladding and roofing for long-term low maintenance.

Sustainability was central to the brief. By reducing the carbon footprint typically associated with traditional hospital builds — particularly energy-intensive plant rooms — the scheme supported the NHS drive toward environmentally responsible infrastructure, with a carbon-neutral construction approach at its core.

The team helped us move away from traditional, siloed structures towards a flexible, technology-enabled space, working hand in hand with our design team to deliver a future-focused build, fully integrated into hospital operations.
