    Challenge

    Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust required additional permanent ward capacity, but the project had to meet demanding programme and financial considerations. The new facility also needed to provide a complete clinical environment rather than simply additional floor area.

    Solution

    Actiform adopted an off-site engineered design and delivered a permanent two-storey ward building through a full design-and-construction package. The facility provides single and five-bed wards alongside a full suite of support areas, creating a purpose-built extension to the Trust’s clinical estate.

    Challenge

    The available development site was an existing parking area. To meet both the Trust’s operational needs and planning conditions, the parking spaces had to be retained while making room for the new ward accommodation.

    Solution

    Working closely with the Northampton General Hospital team, Actiform elevated the wards above the car park and connected the building to the existing hospital at first-floor level. Lifts and stairs provide access from the parking level to the wards, as well as to the roof-mounted plant room.

    Challenge

    The new facility had to meet the technical, safety and operational standards expected of a permanent hospital ward, with all building systems coordinated as one integrated clinical environment.

    Solution

    Actiform designed, manufactured and installed the mechanical and electrical services, bed lifts, medical gases, building management system, alarm systems, fitted furniture, finishes and access control. The completed building complies with HTM/HBN design guidance, current Building Regulations and L2A energy-efficiency requirements.

Actiform worked in close collaboration with Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust to develop a solution that balanced the need for additional permanent clinical accommodation with the practical constraints of a live hospital site.

An off-site engineered approach was adopted from the outset to address the project’s programme and financial requirements. Actiform was responsible for the complete design-and-construction package, coordinating the ward accommodation, support spaces, specialist services and finishes as a single integrated scheme.

The parking constraint shaped the building’s design. By elevating the wards above the existing car park and creating a first-floor connection into the hospital, the scheme retained vital parking provision while allowing the new facility to integrate directly with the wider site.

The result is a permanent, fully serviced ward block designed to meet healthcare guidance, energy requirements and the day-to-day needs of patients and clinical teams.

Having used Actiform to supply a large compound set up on a Smart Motorway project, the service received was second to none. From the initial enquiry to the final installation, all aspects of the project went to plan. The cabin design and layout was revised on numerous occasions and no request or alteration seemed to be too much trouble. All communication, planning and installation was very collaborative and all key dates and deadlines were actually completed ahead of programme. Corin Feltham in particular offered his wealth of knowledge and experience throughout the process along with introducing some excellent ideas to save both time and money. All in all a good experience working with Actiform and I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again on other schemes.
