Actiform designed, manufactured and installed a 60-bed ward for Northampton General NHS Trust as part of a £12m upgrade — delivering a fully operational clinical facility in 32 weeks that gives the Trust a dedicated space to assess patients quickly, away from the pressures of a busy emergency department.

Northampton General NHS Trust needed a dedicated assessment facility that would allow clinical teams to triage and assess patients quickly, without admitting them as in-patients or adding further pressure to an already busy A&E department. The solution required a large-scale modular ward — delivered at pace on a live hospital site, in close collaboration with a major principal contractor — with the clinical sophistication to support the full range of patient needs, including end-of-life care and infection control.

    Challenge

    A 60-bed clinical facility requires a highly varied mix of accommodation — not a uniform ward layout — to serve patients with very different needs, from rapid assessment through to end-of-life care and infection management.

    Solution

    Actiform designed a facility that incorporates small wards, individual rooms, and dedicated spaces for vulnerable patients requiring end-of-life care or infection isolation. The layout gives clinical teams the flexibility to manage a diverse patient cohort within a single, coherent facility — reducing the need to move patients between departments and keeping care as local and consistent as possible.

    Challenge

    The NHS increasingly requires clinical environments to support smarter, faster ways of working — reducing administrative burden and the time clinicians spend on non-patient-facing tasks.

    Solution

    New technology was integrated throughout the facility to support clinical efficiency, including a drugs cabinet with fingerprint scanner enabling staff to retrieve patient medications in under 30 seconds. A link bridge to the existing hospital building was also delivered, ensuring seamless connectivity between the new ward and the wider site without disrupting patient or staff flows.

    Challenge

    Working as a subcontractor alongside a large principal contractor (Interserve) on behalf of the end client required precise communication, clear workstream ownership, and collaborative programme management across multiple large organisations.

    Solution

    Actiform was involved from RIBA Stage 3 through to contract completion — maintaining close communication with Interserve and the Trust throughout, and ensuring mutual understanding of programme milestones, interdependencies, and responsibilities. Despite the scale and complexity of the project, it was completed within the agreed 32-week schedule.

Our Approach

Actiform’s involvement on the NYE Bevan Unit was end-to-end: from design development at RIBA Stage 3, through manufacture of all 78 modular units, to installation and full fit-out on a live hospital site. The turn-key nature of the contract meant Actiform held responsibility for the complete delivery — coordinating groundworks, structure, M&E, clinical technology, and the link bridge within a single, managed programme.

Early engagement and a collaborative working relationship with Interserve — the principal contractor working directly with the Trust — was central to keeping the programme on track. Clear communication channels and a shared understanding of the project’s clinical objectives ensured the facility was delivered not just on time, but fit for purpose from day one.
