Out Patients Department

Actiform designed, manufactured and installed a much-needed Outpatients Department (OPD) to ease capacity pressures at Southend University Hospital. Originally conceived as a standalone facility, the scheme was reworked with the Trust to link directly into the existing hospital building — creating 14 modern, HTM/HBN-compliant consulting rooms supported by office and ancillary space, all delivered as a true turnkey solution.

    Challenge

    The hospital faced capacity constraints in its outpatient services and needed additional clinical space quickly, without disrupting a live, operational site right next to the main hospital entrance.

    Solution

    Actiform delivered the full OPD off-site in just a 16-week site programme, using Off-Site Engineered modular construction to minimise on-site disruption while meeting the Trust's timescales.

    Challenge

    The facility was originally designed as a standalone building, but its position directly beside the main hospital entrance raised questions about patient flow and how it would function within the wider complex.

    Solution

    We worked with the Trust to review and understand patient flow and operational needs, then redesigned the scheme so the building now links directly into the existing hospital building.

    The new department had to deliver modern, fully compliant clinical accommodation suitable for a range of patient needs.

    Actiform created 14 modern, HTM/HBN-compliant consulting rooms — a mix of single and family-sized rooms — supported by office space and ancillary areas.

    The building needed to meet the Trust's budget and specification while satisfying sector building-performance and sustainability targets.

    The scheme was designed to achieve an EPC 'A' rating through robust U-values and integrated solar panels, with sub-contractors carefully selected from incumbent Trust suppliers and Actiform's approved list to meet both budget and specification.

    Challenge

    Delivering a compliant NHS building involves complex building control, planning and coordination processes.

    Solution

    Actiform's specialist in-house team managed the building control processes and planning applications, using BIM throughout, and delivered a single-point turnkey solution covering design, manufacture and installation with quality managed at every stage.

Our Approach

Actiform offered a true turnkey solution, taking responsibility for every aspect of the project — design, manufacture and installation — with quality keenly managed throughout. Rather than build the OPD in isolation, the team worked collaboratively with the Trust to understand patient flow and the operational realities of a busy site beside the main hospital entrance, ultimately linking the new department into the existing building.

Procurement was handled thoughtfully: sub-contractors were selected between incumbent Trust suppliers and Actiform’s own list of approved suppliers, ensuring the project’s needs were met, correctly costed, and aligned with the budget and specifications set out at inception. Our specialist in-house team managed the building control processes and planning applications, with BIM processes used throughout the project to support coordination and quality.

Having used Actiform to supply a large compound set up on a Smart Motorway project, the service received was second to none. From the initial enquiry to the final installation, all aspects of the project went to plan. The cabin design and layout was revised on numerous occasions and no request or alteration seemed to be too much trouble. All communication, planning and installation was very collaborative and all key dates and deadlines were actually completed ahead of programme. Corin Feltham in particular offered his wealth of knowledge and experience throughout the process along with introducing some excellent ideas to save both time and money. All in all a good experience working with Actiform and I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again on other schemes.
