SMART Decontamination Module

Developed in collaboration with leading endoscopy decontamination specialists, Actiform’s SMART Decontamination Module is an off-site manufactured solution that brings carbon-negative, fully integrated decontamination capability to any healthcare estate — fast, with minimal disruption, and without compromise on design.

Expertise
  • Off-site healthcare decontamination facility design
  • Seamless technology integration for clinical environments
  • Sustainable modular product development (EPC A+ / carbon negative)
Deliverables
  • SMART Decontamination Module: temporary, permanent, or rental options
  • Standalone or integrated into existing buildings
  • Full decontamination compliance with future-proofed clinical specification

NHS endoscopy services face a persistent problem: decontamination facilities that don’t meet current clinical standards, are difficult to retrofit in complex operational estates, and create logistical inefficiencies — including unnecessary vehicle journeys transporting endoscopes between sites. Traditional construction approaches are slow, disruptive, and leave little room for flexibility as clinical requirements evolve. A faster, greener, and more adaptable solution was needed.

Challenge

Solution

  1. 01/

    Challenge

Existing decontamination facilities in many NHS trusts are non-compliant, undersized, or unable to support the volume and clinical standards required — but full rebuilds are costly and disruptive to live healthcare estates.

    Solution

Actiform developed the SMART Decontamination Module as a purpose-built off-site solution that meets current clinical requirements from day one. Designed for rapid deployment, it can be installed on a healthcare estate with minimal disruption to ongoing operations — temporary, permanent, or rental arrangements all available to suit individual trust needs.

  2. 02/

    Challenge

Technology integration in clinical environments is often treated as secondary to construction — resulting in facilities that are compliant today but quickly become outdated as clinical practice evolves.

    Solution

The SMART Module is built around seamless integrated technologies, with future-proofing as a core design principle rather than an afterthought. The result is a robust, aesthetically considered solution where design and clinical function are treated as equals, and where the specification can adapt as requirements change.

  3. 03/

    Challenge

Healthcare construction has a significant environmental footprint, and decontamination facilities — with their intensive M&E requirements — are among the most energy-hungry spaces in a clinical estate.

    Solution

The SMART Module is designed to achieve an EPC rating of A+ (carbon negative). Every aspect of the build reflects a circular economy approach: efficient design reduces material wastage, all components are fully deconstructable, and material selection prioritises recycled, recyclable, and reusable products. Reduced vehicle journeys for endoscope transport also cut operational carbon emissions.

Our Approach

The SMART Decontamination Module was developed collaboratively with decontamination specialists who lead in endoscopy — combining deep clinical knowledge with Actiform’s off-site manufacturing expertise to create a market-ready product that doesn’t exist anywhere else. The module can be delivered as a standalone unit or integrated into existing buildings, with the flexibility to be temporary, permanent, or rental depending on the trust’s strategic position.

Sustainability was embedded at every level — from the structural materials through to the operational energy profile — making this one of the most environmentally considered clinical products in the modular healthcare market.

The Results

EPC A+Carbon negative energy performance

100%Deconstructable

100%Recyclable

The Practice are delighted with the outcomes of the delivery of the Project accompanied with ACTIFORM meeting the specifications that had been set out by the Practice and the Practice design team. The Practice have further commented that the solution has provided a really comfortable and bright environment to work within and that the solution has attracted a lot of attention on Lower Marsh and is in keeping with the vibrancy of the immediate locality.
