Thames Tideway Tunnel

To support work on the Thames Tideway Tunnel at Chambers Wharf, Actiform designed, manufactured and installed a three-storey office and welfare facility for the CVB Joint Venture. The £2.3m, 96-bay building was delivered within a 13-week site programme, providing workspace for approximately 140 office staff and welfare facilities for around 200 personnel.

    Challenge

    The Chambers Wharf team needed substantial office and welfare capacity to support a major infrastructure project. The facility had to accommodate around 140 office staff and provide welfare and canteen facilities for approximately 200 personnel, all within a demanding 13-week site programme.

    Solution

    Actiform designed and manufactured a 96-bay, three-storey off-site engineered building covering 3,456m². Factory-based production enabled the main structure and internal elements to be prepared efficiently before installation, helping the project remain on programme.

    Challenge

    CVB Joint Venture had committed to prioritising river transport for the project. Every off-site engineered section and its associated materials therefore had to reach the constrained Chambers Wharf site by water rather than through conventional road deliveries.

    Solution

    Actiform planned the manufacture and installation programme around a dedicated river-based logistics strategy. All sections and materials were transported along the River Thames by pontoon, then offloaded directly from the pontoons onto the site for installation.

    Challenge

    The building needed to support a wide variety of uses, from offices and training rooms to canteen, occupational health, gym, laundry and drying facilities. Each area required the right level of comfort, accessibility and technical performance within one integrated building.

    Solution

    Actiform incorporated VRF air conditioning, dehumidification for drying rooms, PIR-operated LED lighting, a DDA-compliant platform lift and automatic entrance doors. Solar-control glazing, infrared taps, water chillers, glazed partitions with integral blinds and a folding wall system completed a flexible, fully equipped working environment.

Our Approach

Following a competitive tender process, Actiform was appointed to design, manufacture, supply and install the complete office and welfare facility at Chambers Wharf.

The project combined off-site manufacture with carefully coordinated river logistics. Each building section and the associated materials were scheduled for delivery by pontoon on the River Thames, allowing them to be offloaded directly onto the construction site and installed in sequence.

Internally, the facility was designed around the day-to-day needs of both office-based and site personnel. Workspaces, welfare areas and specialist facilities were supported by integrated climate control, lighting, accessibility and interior systems, creating a comfortable and practical environment across all three storeys.

This coordinated approach enabled Actiform to complete the project on time and within budget, while meeting the client’s operational and logistical requirements.
