Transportable Endoscopy Unit — TAC Healthcare

Actiform partnered with Aberdeen-based TAC Healthcare Group to design, manufacture and install a ground-breaking carbon neutral transportable endoscopy unit — bringing essential diagnostic procedures into local communities across NHS Grampian, and adding much-needed capacity to a service facing a backlog of up to half a million cases post-Covid.

NHS endoscopy services were already under significant pressure before the pandemic. Covid-19 service interruptions created an additional backlog of up to half a million cases across the NHS, with patients facing long waits for essential diagnostic procedures. Traditional hospital-based endoscopy units are energy-intensive, slow to commission, and fixed in location — unable to respond quickly to where demand is greatest or bring care closer to patients in the community.

    Challenge

    Fixed hospital endoscopy facilities cannot be deployed flexibly to meet demand across different locations — leaving patients in more remote areas or underserved communities facing longer waits and further travel.

    Solution

    Actiform designed and manufactured a fully transportable endoscopy unit that can be deployed within local communities across the NHS Grampian area, away from the traditional hospital environment. The unit delivers the same clinical standard as a fixed facility but in a less clinical, more accessible setting — improving both patient experience and procedural throughput by bringing the service to where patients actually are.

    Challenge

    Endoscopy decontamination facilities are traditionally among the most energy-intensive spaces in a healthcare estate — conflicting with the NHS’s net zero ambitions and creating ongoing operational cost pressures.

    Solution

    The unit was designed from the ground up to be carbon neutral, addressing the high energy demands of traditional endoscopy and decontamination plant through a hybrid modular approach. This makes it not only more sustainable than a permanent facility, but more cost-effective to operate — enabling the Trust to treat more patients in a financially and environmentally sustainable way.

    Challenge

    Addressing the post-pandemic endoscopy backlog required a solution that could be commissioned quickly — not over the years typically required to plan, fund, and build a permanent hospital extension.

    Solution

    Actiform delivered the complete unit in just 10 weeks — from design and manufacture through to installation and handover. The modular approach dramatically compressed the timeline compared to traditional construction, providing TAC Healthcare with a rapid, practical solution to an urgent clinical capacity problem.

Our Approach

Actiform worked in close partnership with the TAC Healthcare team throughout the full design, manufacture and installation process, combining Actiform’s off-site manufacturing expertise with TAC’s deep knowledge of endoscopy service delivery. The result is a modular unit that reflects genuine clinical thinking — designed to be expanded with additional modules for services such as imaging as demand grows.

The unit also builds on Actiform’s wider work in transportable imaging, including the delivery of a transportable mammography unit at Glenfield and subsequent collaboration with FUJI Film — demonstrating an established capability in taking diagnostic healthcare into communities that currently lack easy access to facilities.
