Transportable Mammography Facility

Leicester University Hospitals NHS Trust required a specialist mammography facility that could operate as a fully equipped, self-contained clinical unit while remaining easy to relocate. Working in partnership with the Trust and Hologic Ltd, Actiform designed and constructed a transportable solution with integrated services, clinical-grade finishes and energy-efficient environmental controls.

Challenge

Solution

  1. 01/

    Challenge

Leicester University Hospitals NHS Trust needed additional specialist mammography facilities, but the solution also had to remain transportable rather than becoming a permanent, site-specific building.

    Solution

Actiform developed a fully equipped, self-contained facility on a 15m x 4m platform. The complete unit was designed to be relocated using standard transport, giving the Trust a flexible alternative to permanent construction.

  2. 02/

    Challenge

A relocatable clinical facility still needed access to the hospital’s essential sanitary, electrical and data infrastructure, without requiring complex reconnection work each time it moved.

    Solution

All sanitary, electrical and data services were built into the unit. Standard connectors provided straightforward links to the hospital’s existing facilities, helping the building become operational efficiently following relocation.

  3. 03/

    Challenge

The facility had to provide a comfortable, hygienic environment suitable for clinical use while managing energy consumption efficiently.

    Solution

Actiform specified clinical-standard internal finishes alongside full air conditioning, tempered fresh air and heat-recovery technology. This created an appropriate environment for patients and clinical teams while improving energy efficiency.

Our Approach

Actiform worked in partnership with Leicester University Hospitals NHS Trust and Hologic Ltd to develop the facility around both its immediate clinical purpose and its longer-term need for flexibility.

The design was based on a standard 15m x 4m transportable platform. By integrating all sanitary, electrical and data infrastructure within the building, Actiform created a self-contained unit that could be moved using standard transport and connected to hospital services through straightforward standard connections.

The internal environment was completed to a clinical standard, with air conditioning, tempered fresh air and heat recovery incorporated to support patient comfort, clinical requirements and energy efficiency.

The platform was also designed with wider adaptability in mind. The same concept can support a variety of temporary clinical uses, including minor operations, scanning, dental and GP services, and can be supplied for medium-term lease or purchase.
